Pokemon Tower Defense: Level 6 progress, Weekly Updates, and more.

UPDATE 3: Level is about 85.111233232% done! About an hour if everything goes smoothly!

UPDATE 2: Update is still coming tonight, just a heads up this next level is going to be a free roam level, meaning no candy, you can capture everything in the level, bunch of waves. The levels are design as a good way to level up and capture pokemon, however no money will be awarded in the free roam levels. If I have some extra time I will include 2 free roam levels in this update so that it's easier to get pikachu.

UPDATE: This next update will be done by Sunday night the latest, won't be done today Saturday :( Thanks for your patience.

Hey guys! It's me again, so it looks like most of you want the updates to come on a weekly basis (me too!). I think that looking forward to an update on a weekly basis is fun, it reminds me of waiting each week for my favorite tv show to come on so I can watch it. Out of 2442 (I swear this thing got reset or something) 21% wanted monthly big juicy updates but, 78% wanted weekly quick updates!

This next poll is about where you play the game, I'm interest to see which version I should focus on more.

I'm making a list for level 6 so you guys can see where the progress is at, I must note that coming up with a level probably takes longer than actually making it.

New Pokemon, with all Moves up to lvl 20:

  • Spearow with 3 new moves (100% done)
  • Nidoran Male with 1 new move (100% done)
  • Nidoran Female with 1 new move (100%, done)
  • Jigglypuff with 4 new moves (100% done)
  • Mankey with 3 new moves (100% done) (Not doing the move Covet since there are no items)
New Evolutions with all Moves up to lvl 20:
  • Nidorina no new moves (100% done)
  • Nidorino no new moves (100% done)
  • Fearow no new moves (100% done)
Also don't forget to get your Shiny Starter, by donating any amount you will receive a code that you can put in the mystery gift and change your starter into a shiny. Also if you donate 10 or more you will also get rare candies and evolutions stone, finally if you donate 20 or more you will get all the previous gifts plus your very own shiny Mew!  To donate click on the donate button on the top right corner of the page.

NOTE: I'm currently giving out the shiny starters the other gifts will be given out at a later date.

A fan of the game, Peter Thompson, wrote a great article that has to do with this game. You guys should check it out ! http://thompsonpeters.blogspot.com/2011/03/whats-in-game-would-roselia-by-any.html

Also I'm making a tab with the latest links to the game, so that it's easier to find, but I will post them here just in case.

      • Convert all account to shiny (100%)
    • Allow the hacked version of the game to use hacked version pokemon to get hacked version legendary birds (100%) (This will show up on v1.0)
The last two points are of special interest. Converting all Legendary Beast (dogs) to shiny. I never really explained it so I can see why some of you are confused. Well PTD 2 is set on the Johto Region which has Entei, Suicune, Raikou in them. In that game you can expect to catch the regular version without having to pay. So I think people that paid 20 snd coins for them would be very upset that other people can easily get them without paying. Converting them to shiny allows for the regular version to show up in the game while still having the shiny be rare as the beast are now. If you really just want to have them be regular as one person mentioned then you will have to wait until they are available in PTD 2, another possibility is that I convert them but then add the regular ones in the adoption center for a smaller coin price.

The second point is that in the hacked games you can't get the legendary birds at all. This change will allow you to get them in the hacked version of the game but they will be branded as hacked version.

Speaking of hacking... I wanted to clarify the different levels of hacking, what I'm okay with and what I'm not okay with. What I do to stop them and what the hell happened this weekend. So first I want to talk about "Hacked version" pokemon and playing the hacked version on various websites like hacked arcade games. Having pokemon with the "Hacked version" tag (that can be seen on the pokemon center) or playing the hacked version games on those sites, (You can see HACKED VERSION in red letters in the main screen) is not something that I'm against. Which is why I asked you guys if you wanted a way to convert from "hacked version" to normal. Since playing the hacked version is not really hacking at all but more like a cheat code. Any other form of hacking, either using cheat engine or any scripts I do not agree with. Recently we have some drama with hackers attacking other hackers and users were caught in the middle of it. I believe everything is resolved now. So lets move on. (If you want to find out more about the whole incident head to our fan run forum.)

So looking at the poll I can see that the majority wants to be able to convert hacked pokemon back to normal, but a good chunk (29% as of writing this) don't want it. Some might think that it's not fair since you can level up pokemon much faster in the hacked version. But they also have to spend their precious casino coins on clearing hacked pokemon that you can spend on Shadow pokemon. If anything I'm interested to hear what could be tweaked in the idea that would make it so you would agree with it.

    PTD 2
I get a lot of emails asking me questions or giving me suggestions about PTD 2. While I can't answer them all (I wouldn't be able to get anything else done if I did) I do read them all since it's easier to read and move on that read and think of a good reply to send back. People talk about different things in these emails but the one thing that people talk about the most is transferring pokemon from PTD 1 to PTD 2. So I want to talk in more detail about my current plans (these can change) on the subject.

    1. Yes, you will be able to transfer your pokemon from PTD 1 to PTD 2.
    2. You won't be able to transfer pokemon from PTD 2 to PTD 1 if they don't exist in PTD 1 or have moves that don't exist in PTD 1. Any other pokemon that exist in PTD 1 and has moves from PTD 1 can be transferred back and forth. (By exist I mean that you can capture in PTD 1)
    3. You won't be the same character in PTD 2 that you are in PTD 1 so your pokemon won't obey you when you trade them over unless you have the proper badge. So transferring a level 100 won't mean that you can beat the game easily since that pokemon won't obey you.
    4. You won't be able to trade pokemon from PTD 1 to PTD 2 until you have 4 badges in PTD 2. After you get 4 badges the ability to trade from PTD1 to PTD 2 will be unlocked.
    5. When you trade a pokemon over to PTD 2 it won't lose any of its experience or level.
I hope this explains a lot of the questions.

    Creature Universe (Project ANPO)
I've been so focused on PTD 1 and HTD that I haven't been able to design more for ANPO. If you haven't read the past post for ANPO I suggest you check them out to get all the juicy details.

Before I conclude, I wanted to say that there won't be any new Mystery Gifts for PTD 1. Also for PTD 2 I'm going to rethink the Mystery Gift to see if there is a better way of making it happen or if I will keep it the same.

As always let me know what you think! I read all the comments, so even if I don't reply rest assured that I read it. I have to read them to accept or deny them so even if you post doesn't get published I looked at it. :)

So have a good week and keep coming back to check out my progress and Thursday for HTD! Enjoy!

Welcome to the Sam & Dan Games Developer Blog! Let's begin!

    Fundraiser Continues!
The fundraiser continues on this week, the first 1% took a loooong time but the second % took only 3 days, maybe things are picking up, only 98 more to go! Let's look at more information for the fundraiser, if you already read it then feel free to skip ahead since I didn't add anything new this week. This is mainly for those who haven't read anything on it and to remind you that we are still doing this. :)

Sam & Dan Games: Fundraiser! Phase 2
    Our Goal: $50,000
    Raised so far: $2,700.84
    Percentage so far: 5.401%
Total Funders so far: 2834 (Number drastically increased due to new ways to donate!)
Last updated: 2/20/13 (5:44 PM EST)

    What is this fundraiser about?

Dan and I love making games and we want to continue to make them. If you are reading this then I suspect you have enjoyed PTD and PTD2 quite a bit. Right now Dan has another full time job since we don't make enough to support him. I work full time on the games, relying heavily on ad revenue from the trading center/blog and a part of the SnD coin sales. While those sources provide some help they are far from steady. If ads and sales go down it could potentially lead to me having to stop making games or spend considerably less time working on them. Meaning less updates for you guys. We really don't want it to get to that point so we decided to humble ourselves and ask you, the fans, for help.

The 50k amount might seem like a lot but in reality it is the bare minimum we need to be able to keep working on games for the rest of this year.

Do I get anything for funding?

Yes! Absolutely! We always want to reward our fans when they give to us. Like I mentioned before on a previous blog we will have many prizes for those that donate to us. Some of the prizes include:
    • Cosmoids Creatures for your PTD2 account
    • Shiny Legendary Pokemon only available to people who help us fund
    • Special Exclusive Creature for Cosmoids
    • Special Titles for your Trading Account
    • Access to the early Alpha version of Cosmoids
The current announced prizes are the following:
    • Donate any amount - Access to the Early Alpha Version of Cosmoids with Sam's Graphics
      • Just for donating you will get a code that will let you play Cosmoids and give feedback on the game before anybody else. Note: The Early Alpha Version is not released yet.
    • Donate $5 or more - Shiny Legendary Rayquaza for your PTD2 account + Previous Prize
      • You will get 2 Shiny Rayquaza for your ptd2 account. Note: These will be given out next week.

    What is are the Phases?
Since we are constantly working on updates for you guys we have to take everything we do little by little. So the funding will have different phases.

Each phase will come when new prizes are announced. Regardless of when you donate if you have donated enough to qualify for a prize you will receive it once the prize is available.

Sounds good! I want to support you guys, how do I do it?
Thank you! To support us just click on the donate amount below and enter the amount you wish to donate. We will send you the activation code for your donation in an email.

Is there a way to donate without needing a credit credit card?
Yes! You can now watch a short video to donate a few cents and get access to the rewards. You can also complete free offers and surveys to donate. Go to the Pokemon Center's Funding Rewards page to watch the video or complete the offers.

    Questions?
If you have any questions at all, email me at support@sndgames.com

    Common Questions:
    • What if my paypal email is different from my PTD2 email? How will I get the prizes to my PTD2 account?
      • Easy! When you make a donation we will reply with a code to your paypal email. On your PTD2 email you can use the code in the near future to activate your prizes. So the paypal email does NOT need to match your ptd email since you will just need the code itself.
    • It has been more than 24 hours since my donation but I haven't received any emails?
      • First check your Junk Folder for any emails from us. Second if you have nothing on your Junk Folder or you accidentally deleted it then email us at sam@sndgames.com with your paypal email and we will get you your code.

Please allow us up to 24 Hours to process your donation. Cosmoids Early Alpha will begin next week. Hold on to your codes until then. If you haven't received your code and it has been more than 24 hours then check your Junk Folder for the email. Also add orders@sndgames.com to your contacts so that it won't enter your junk folder.

    Friendship and Happiness!
One of the most requested things to add to the game is a way to evolve pokemon that need a high friendship value to evolve. This week I hope to bring that into the game. The way I will implement it is that you can buy a friendship item in the pokemon center using snd coins or daily coins to increase their happiness. Once their happiness is high enough you can evolve that pokemon without having to level up!

    Evolution Stones
Just like happiness it's time to add in Evolution Stones. These will also be acquired using daily coins or snd coins.

    New Daily Coin Activity
Because we are adding new items to buy with daily coins we will be adding at least one new daily coin activity that you can do to earn your daily coins. I don't have the exact details of it figured out yet but I will talk about it more as the week progresses.

An Unown Problem and a Hidden Power Solution
So Story wise on PTD2 the next spot is the Ruins of Alph which feature the mysterious Unown pokemon. In the original games you would have an Unown for every letter in the alphabet and for ! and ?. The way PTD2 is coded does not support having these different forms so I run into the problem of how I'm going to do it. Unown also learn only one attack called Hidden Power. This move changes depending on the Individual Values of your Pokemon. IV is something that I don't have in PTD2 either. So here I am with two things that don't really fit what I have here. One solution is to add these features into the game but that will take a long time and it's not something I had planned to do. So instead I came up with my own solution. Many might not like it but it is how it's going to be.

So basically the solution is that your Unown will not have a specific form. His form will be randomize every time you play the game. So when you log in the Unown will pick a random letter and become that form while you are playing. Next time you log in it will again randomly pick which form. The same thing will happen with the move Hidden Power. It will change it's type and attack power randomly when you start a battle. So every battle you could get a different type and power but once the battle is going it will stay the same.

    Mystery Gift Shelmet
Last week you guys choose Karrablast as your Bug Mystery Gift but as many of you know and mentioned you need Shelmet to make Karrablast evolve. So this week we will get Shelmet and evolutions will be possible! All rejoice!

    Funder's prize Shiny Rayquaza
So Rayquaza won the poll and this week I will work on giving those out at the end of the week. Stay tuned!

    Cosmoids Evolution
Cosmoids is still under development, I think when I say something like that a lot of you might imagine me and our artist putting many hours into it but the reality is that there aren't enough hours in the day to really give each project a lot of time. The development that is happening for Cosmoids are different conversations about how the game should play. What changes do we want to make from the PTD formula? How should we present changing moves during a battle? Talking to artist about needing a specific designs, getting updates about their progress. The actual work going on is me making some graphics and starting to put together the basic programming for the game that will be the foundation for the project. There is so much to do but so little time, especially when I'm working on PTD2.

    Other ways to donate
UPDATE: You can now donate by watching a short video ad or completing free offers and surveys. You get access to the Cosmoids Alpha once that is released and you can eventually accumulate enough to earn other rewards.Go the the Pokemon Center's Funding Rewards page to watch them or complete the offers.

Welcome to the Sam and Dan Games Developer Blog! Coming back from chaos!

Sam and Dan Games: Fundraiser! Phase 3
Help us keep making games and earn awesome prizes like Shiny Rayquaza and Shiny Heatran!
      Our Goal: $50,000

      What's New
It has been chaos, to say the least, these past couple of weeks. For the first time in my life I moved out of my parents house and into my own apartment. All of this in preparation for my wedding which is 2 short months from now! Chaos might have been a soft word. With all the moving also came computer problems. I had to take my development computer to be fixed and now my old computer is giving me trouble. I've never had this much trouble before! While I haven't been able to really sit down and work on anything my mind has not stopped thinking about what and who is making all of this possible. You guys and gals are the reason I'm able to push my life into the next stage and I'm able to wake up every day and think about making video games instead of coding something I have no interest in for somebody I don't even really know. Because of that I will give it my all as long as you guys will have me.

I did manage a few things, Cosmoids got a small update, some tweaks on the first level to make it a bit shorter and some massive changes to the tutorials so they are easier to understand and more to the point.

      Speaking of Cosmoids...

Designing a game before coding it
The way I make Pokemon Tower Defense is that each week I think about what to work on next and early in the week I will make a plan, write the blog with my plan and then I try to accomplish my plan. In more detail this means I'm making it up as I go. Each week I think about where the story could go. While I have some very basic plans for the overall story, the lines of dialog and the different events that will happen are not planned out months in advance. At the most I will have an idea like having Mewthree win, and then slowly during the week I will think about how this will happen. Same with the battles, ptd1 transfers, new attacks. Having been doing this for a few years now I can see that there are benefits to this method. The main benefit is the speed that you can put things out. There are however some drawbacks to this style. I think an obvious example is the Avatars in PTD1. Your player doesn't have an avatar until later in the game. This is the result of not having time to add it initially but then eventually getting the time and figuring out how to add it in. Going back and adding it to all the previous levels would have been a big undertaking that would have stalled the game updates so I was never willing to do it. At the same thing I think it is odd to add new things as you go and having the old content not take advantage of these things.

So for Cosmoids I want to design the game in advance before I make it. What this means is that I will be coming up with the levels and moves in advance before I actually code them. Then I will see what everything looks like and be able to implements new things into the whole game instead of just adding them as I go. So far I have designed up to level 5. My goal for the game is for it to have about 40ish levels before I consider it complete.

Designing a level doesn't take a very long time but making it interesting, challenging, and fun can be quite a challenge. For Cosmoids we are following a similar formula that PTD1 has. You watch a story scene then you play the level and you watch another story scene. So the first thing you have to think about is where is your story at. What happened in the previous level, in the previous story scene and where do you want the story to go and how will it tie into the next Cosmoids you want to use on the next level. Then you think about what attacks should this new Cosmoid have and how is it different from the others. What kind of different role can it take. Finally using those new attacks you create an idea for how the level itself will play. What will be the challenge on the level. How will you test the player. Will it be a puzzle or the ability to dodge moves. Or will he have to have Cosmoids that have high defense. A lot of thought goes into making each level. So being able to focus on just the design lets you do it quick and it also lets you see the big picture quicker which can hopefully lead to the game feeling more unified.

Going to the past: The next PTD2 Story Update
It's going to be a good one! Mewthree has taken over the world with his massive clones, your friends, family and heroes are about to be captured. Celebi, the time traveling pokemon, shows up and offers you a chance to save the world but you must go to the past to change it! This update will have you going to the past. You will be able to visit the locations that you have already visited but 10 years into the past. In the world you aren't born yet and Silver is still alive! What can do you to stop the events in the future? Only time will tell.

The past will be a different place, while the maps themselves will look the same, you can expect more people to be around, and different house and buildings to be accessible.

You will be able to enter the poke mart and buy items. You will be able to enter the pokemon center and rest until night time, day time or early morning. Essentially giving you control over the time of day. There will be more trainer battles in the Routes.

Another cool feature is that you can travel back to the future! Talking to celebi from your pokepad will allow you to travel back a few moments before Mewthree took over the region, allowing you to replay old battles or talk to people in the future after finding out more about them in the past.

There is a lot of content to be added to make this update possible and I hope you guys enjoy the things I have planned.

                                Our Goal: $50,000

                                Status Changes
Something that has been bugging me for a while is that you can get paralyzed, poisoned, burned, put to sleep all at the same time in PTD. In the game you can only have one of these on you at a time. So my wish is to make it work like that on PTD 2. What do you think? Will it make things harder? Easier? Do you like the change?

                                Trap Mechanics
Another mechanic change that I want to make is to actually make the trap mechanic have an effect on pokemon while in battles. The new effect will be that pokemon will not be able to leave the level when you have trapped them (using mean look, or arena trap etc). They can still get the candy and take it away but they won't leave the stage. Pokemon with abilities like Run Away can still leave the stage.

                                Headbutt Mechanic
This week I'm going to introduce the headbutt mechanic into the game! This has been a much requested feature so I'm happy to finally be able to add it in. How I'm thinking about it is that you have to have the pokemon that knows headbutt follow you in the map and then simply you go close to a tree and you press the action button. Pretty similar to fishing. That will trigger a battle. Some new pokemon that you will be able to get with this process will be: Pineco, Aipom and Heracross!

                                Route 34
I'm also adding Route 34 to the game to continue pushing the story mode forward. This road includes the Day Care center. I'm still thinking about how I might handle this place since I already have the breeding center page. Have any ideas that wouldn't totally break the game? Let me know. Also Snubbull will be one of the pokemon in this route, so look forward to that.

                                Cosmoid Rewards
It's been a loooong time coming but this week I will definately add the Cosmoids Rewards to the game. If you don't know what this is I will explain it now. For our fundraiser if you donated 10 or more dollars you will get Shiny Heatran and your choice of Cosmoids Starter for your PTD2 account. For a while now we haven't added the Cosmoid Reward and now you will. Cosmoids is a new game that we are making that is a lot like pokemon but with our own unique creatures on it. For more information on the fundraiser click the link towards the top of this post.

                                Mystery Gift
Like every week we have the mystery gift and giveaways.

                                Soft Level Cap to 40
Last but not least, I will be increasing the soft level cap to 40. This will add 19 new moves into the game and get us one step closer to the elusive level 100 soft cap.

As you can see we have a lot lined up for this week. Wish me luck!

Sam and Dan Games: Fundraiser! Phase 3
Help us keep making games and earn awesome prizes like Shiny Rayquaza!
                                    Our Goal: $50,000

                                    Latest PTD2 Update v1.37.1
The last PTD2 update again brought us some great new things. We kicked it off with Ditto, Onix and Scyther as new pokemon that you could transfer from ptd1 to ptd2. It goes without saying that Ditto is a great addition since you will be able to breed some of the previously unbreedable pokemon like golett and beldum. I hope their numbers will go up as time passes on. In addition to those I added the Metal Coat item that will enable you to evolve your Onix and Scyther into Steelix and Scizor respectively. The twist is that you need to find the Metal Coat somewhere in the game's story mode maps before you can unlock it to buy in the Item Store. I hope I can add more item hunts in the future like this. Like every week we also had a mystery gift which was Shiny Spheal which you can get all this week (as many as you want!) and we had a very limited giveaway for shiny snorunt. Last but not least I added a new story level to the game. You will battle with a Shadow Entei, watch out for his devastating Mean Lock/Fire ball combo. A small tip is to use pokemon like the Mystery Gift Spheal to take hits of the fireball for other pokemon. Good luck!

                                    Fundraiser.. slow and steady
I haven't forgotten about the fundraiser but I feel like the prize for the 10 dollar mark just aren't as interesting as Rayquaza was at 5 dollars. What do you guys think would be a worthy prize for the 10 dollar mark? In case you don't know the current prize for 10 dollars is all the previous prizes plus your choice at Cosmoid Starter for your PTD2 account. Let me know in the comments below or on twitter.

                                    Live Streaming
We all know I like to keep you guys updated on all my game development efforts. I updated the blog with my progress, I have a current status in the blog that I update. The next logical step is to show you guys directly and live what I'm doing. Nowadays live streaming is very simple to do. So the question is would you guys want to see a live stream here and there of me working on games? Obviously I would have to cut out certain things that I wouldn't want to show you. But again let me know what you think of this.

                                    Baby Pokemon Incoming!
Originally with PTD1 to PTD2 transfers I wanted to go in pokedex order, but after last week of kind of picking and choosing I think it's more fun that way. So while reading some comments of last week's blog I noticed somebody mentioned magmar and electabuzz and that got me thinking. They have something in common which is they have prevolutions! (They also have evolutions but we won't get them this week) As a third pokemon to transfer it made sense to bring in Jynx which also has a preevolution! Babies for everyone I say!

                                    Dawn Stone and other items
Like the week before I plan to bring the Dawn Stone to let you evolve your female Snorunts into Froslass. I don't however plan to add many more evolution items in the next week as I want to feature them in the story at other points in the game. So you won't be evolving your Magmars and Electabuzzes any time soon. Please don't ask :)

                                    Mystery Gift
This week it looks like it's Dark's turn. Vote on the poll to see who will be the shiny Mystery Gift and who will be the Shiny Giveaway! I will hopefully be able to slow down people that are getting more than one set by using multiple accounts. Stay tuned.

Soft Level Cap Increased to 30! Plus get the moves that are in the game!
I'm also increasing the soft level cap to 30! (Aren't I nice?) I'm also changing it so that if the move is in the game then your pokemon can learn it regardless of the soft cap. This is something I've been wanting to do for a while and this week I will be tackling it. What this means is that lets say I increase the level cap to 30 like I am this week that means Gible can learn Dragon Claw at level 27. This is great news for somebody with a gible but what about somebody with a Gabite or Garchomp? They learn it at level 33. So before this meant that even if the move was there ready to be used, you didn't have access to it due to the soft cap. So I'm removing that limitation. If the move is ready to be used in the game then your pokemon will learn it. I will however be sticking to adding new moves based on the soft cap so keep that in mind.

                                    Cosmoids Progress
I'm pretty happy with my Cosmoids progress for last week I got the creature swapping mechanic down and I"m pleased with my efforts. Sadly I didn't get much time to work on the new move mechanic but I hope to crush that down this week. In games usually you spend a lot of time building the base of the game. The core mechanics that the player will have to keep doing over and over so I take great care in trying to make these the best that they can be. Once you nail the basics down it is all about making the content which goes by a lot faster. In ptd this is similar to how long it took ptd2 to release and then how quickly I can make new moves now. Patience is the key but after you pass that stage everything starts speeding up.

                                    Weekly Progress
Ah yes, the progress part of the blog. Like every week I will post the details of everything I'm working on and then throughout the week I will update it as I make things. So keep checking back and cheer me on as I complete the task for this week.

You must have an account on the forums to read the post.
Here is a video for the contest! (Thanks Graphic Force!)

The reason many of you couldn't save is that the server that I'm paying for only allows 150 connections on at the same time. So I payed for an upgrade to the server to allow double that. The upgrade takes about 24 hours so you will be seeing the difference soon.

I think that the auto-save is saving too often I will be moving it so that it saves after the level is finished and when you press back on the "Mode select" screen. Right now when you enter the "Mode" Screen it will save automatically I will change it so it happens when you press back from that screen. Meaning when you go back to your profile selection.

Also I will add a manual save button in the "Mode" screen that way if you feel unsure you can just manually save. These changes should lower the amount of saving going on thus decreasing the server load and reducing all problems with saving.

Okay moving on. The poll seems to be busted (No, you aren't the only person that voted everybody is seeing their vote as the only one). But I'm pretty sure nobody is against and Experience Gain and Shiny Encounter Rate boost for this week coming week only. The reason for this is many people weren't saving their profile online and when this new version came out they ended up losing a lot of their progress. This boost will help you get back to where you were before.

The boost will be 50% more experience on all kills.
Shiny Rate will go from 0.1% to 0.4% that is four times more likely to find a shiny.

Both of these will go back down for the update after.

This update I hope will be really exciting! There will be a one week only event and you will have a chance to fight and use legendary pokemon. There will be 3 mystery code hunts this weekend one for each of the legendary dogs. After the week is over the legendary dogs will no longer be available and will be removed from everybody's account. The point of having them is to have a fun one time event, and being able to have pokemon with massive power. I hope you guys enjoy it.

On top of that there will be a new story level, featuring the S.S. Anne, and a gym battle so I hope you guys can enjoy that.

Before I forget to mention, we added a new way to get Ninja-ja: Apprentice Edition for free. Click on this link or go to the "Get Ninja-ja" page and click on the get it free button. Basically if you can complete any of the offers on that page then you get the game for free. If you guys want me to have this available for the other version of the game let me know.

Also soon we will have a completely free version of Ninja-ja that doesn't include any of the prizes, so look forward to that also.

Last I leave you with the progress list:

Increase Experience Gain by 50% (100%)

Welcome to Hero Tower Defense Thursday!

                                              HTD Logo

Go here to read Day 22 of Hero Tower Defense Thursday.

Another week, another new release for HTD (and another late post, sorry about that). Fire is back and Shadow is still here. You will now have a character with all Fire skills, another with all Shadow skills, and the last with a mix. This gives you an idea of how your characters can have different skill setups and allows you to play around with each. The effect of the Shadow skills is now more apparent with it's new graphics, namely the DaT effect of Shadow. We've also added some cooldown visuals so you know what's going on when the skill you're spamming isn't triggering. There are also some new (re-colored, lawl) whelps flying around, they are a little older than the other ones so we've nerfed the younger original whelps to only be able to melee while the new ones can spit fireballs and will melee when someone is close to them.

                                              What's New:

                                              -Re-added Fire skills

-Added Key Bindings, 0 is your Native Skill, 1 is skill slot 1, and 2 is skill slot 2.

-Added new Native Skill graphics for Fire and Shadow, they are no longer just glows that grow

-Made one hero all Fire, another all Shadow, and the last a mix which randomly picks which NS to use and which other two skills to use as well as which skill slots to put them in between 1 and 2 (so sometimes magical skills like the fireball and shadow bite will be in skill slot 1 for example)

-Added new graphics for Shadow skill icons and effects

-Added a new red whelp that is stronger than the original whelp and will attack you with fireballs unless you get close to them

-Nerfed original orange whelp so that they can't spit fireballs anymore and only melee attack

-Implemented Elemental Countering, currently with only two types of elemental skills this isn't going to be very noticeable but the Fire Native Skill (NS) will erase the Shadow NS because Fire counters Shadow (Currently only NS counter eachother, other skills are left alone for now). However, your heroes are clever (well a little anyway) and won't use their NS on a target that already has another NS on it unless it's the same type, otherwise they'll attack the target using one of their other skills.

Each week I'll list and update the descriptions for the current skills available in the game. That way you guys know what they actually do (eventually there will be in-game descriptions). I'll just provide a brief description for now because the actual damage values and such will be changing a lot as we tweak them. You'll be able to see them in the future though.

                                              Key Terms:

Direct Damage (DD) - Causes full damage instantly
Damage over Time (DoT) - Causes continuous damage over a period of time
Damage after Time (DaT) - Causes damage after a period of time has passed

Here are descriptions for the current skills in the game:

                                              Fire:

                                              Burn
(Native Elemental - Stackable DoT - Fire Burning Man Icon) - Sets your target on fire causing it to take continuous damage. Stacks up to five times. Grants the caster a Fire Charge that increases their Fire Damage. A character can hold up to five charges at a time.

Fireball (Tier 1 Magical Elemental - DD - Fireball Icon) - Hurls a fireball at your target

                                              Shadow:

Infliction (Native Elemental - Stackable DoT - Shadow Consuming Man Icon) - Inflicts your target with Shadow decreasing it's Physical and Magical Defense. Stacks up to five times. Grants the caster a Shadow Charge that increases their Shadow damage. A character can hold up to five charges at a time.

Dark Strike (Tier 1 Physical Elemental - DD + DaT - Shadowy Sword Icon) - Attacks with your weapon engulfed in shadow, does additional damage after timer runs out.

Shadow Bite (Tier 1 Magical Elemental - DD + DaT - Shadow Bolt Icon) - Casts a shadowy bolt at your target that fills it with darkness till it explodes, does additional damage after timer runs out.

                                              Currently in the Works:

                                              Revised Human Male
                                              Water/Nature/Light Elemental Skills
                                              Character Customization
                                              Character Skill Selection
                                              Interface Additions
                                              And More!

Kevin currently has a poll going on his blog, KXN @ HTD for determing what order we'll be adding the elemental skills in (Ignore the The Second Element title, he's just extending the time and it won't let him change it). Shadow was winning originally so we did that as the second element already.

On a final note, if you haven't been to Kevin's blog let me provide you with a glimpse of the revised Human Male who will be join the battle soon!

My goal for the game was to finish the story mode in a year or less and while I didn't complete my goal I think we got pretty close!

I don't even know myself which is why I will keep updating the blog with my progress towards finishing it. I really don't want to try to rush the ending since I want it to be very special. The reason I'm not releasing it little by little is that I really want you guys to experience it all at once.

                                              Random Game Sequels

When I got my internet back and saw the huge pile of emails that I have there I saw a couple that were really interesting. Mostly regarding a game that I didn't make but it's called Pokemon TD 2: Kanto. If any of you were wondering I had nothing to do with this game at all. If you want to know what I think about it, then my response is... neat. I don't own Pokemon so the fact that somebody made this game doesn't bother me and I think that it is pretty flattering that somebody decided to make it, it's interesting to me to see the changes that he made to the game and friendly competition is always welcomed :) On a side note, my sequel will be about a million times better ;p

                                              Pokemon Tower Defense 2

Speaking of sequels! You guys made it loud and clear in the last poll! 56% of you want instant capture with the pokeballs. Looking at all the comments and arguments made, I totally agree with you! What I will do is keep the 100% catch rate when weakened but still have multiple pokeballs, I'll think of ways to implement them without letting you capture the pokemon when they have really high health and then I will present the idea to you again.

For PTD 2 I really want to introduce some elements to the game that will make the game fell fresh while still retaining what made PTD well PTD. Here are 3 new elements that I want you to look at and tell me what you think.

                                              1. The "candy" can move - When I say the "candy" I mean the thing that the attacking units will be after, so it can be candy, a pokemon, an egg, etc. In PTD 1 the candy was always stationary. Only the enemy could move it and then you could manipulate the enemy (using moves like whirlwind) and then defeat them to change its location. In PTD 2 sometimes the "candy" will try to return to it's original spot once dropped. Sometimes it might be trying to leave the level by itself. Adding this new functionality will enable all kinds of new levels.
                                              2. Blocking or Unblocking paths - A new mechanic that I want to add for PTD 2 is being able to block or unblock a path that your enemies or allies can go in. An example is the enemy has direct access to the "candy" you can block their path but putting an obstacle in their way (How exactly you would do this is still up in the air) and now they have to down a long way to reach the "candy" giving you more of a chance to defeat them. In the same way you might want to unblock a path, you might have to use attacks to destroy the the obstacle or have your pokemon carry the obstacle away.
                                              3. Special Abilities - Another feature that many modern Tower Defense games have is some sort of special ability that you can use to help you defeat the enemies. In a lot of game this will be a Meteor attack. Something that you can click and drag to the enemies to unleash upon them. Normally you will have to wait for this move to recharge, charging it might be done by your towers attacking or just naturally over time. The special abilities will vary based on what your current team is.
So that is what I have in mind, some new mechanics that will enable all kinds of different new levels. Tell me what you think on the comments below.

                                              Creature Universe Game (ANPO)

This game is always shifting, changing, evolving in my head. Recently I decided it was time to start putting down some notes on paper to really start to brainstorm what this game will be about and what ideas I want to explore in it. Today I bring you some of my notes plus I open it up to you guys to tell me what you think this game could be about. Note that while I read every single comment I can't comment or agree with all of them but I do read them and they do affect my decisions and way of thinking. So they are more than welcome.  While in the bathroom (a lot of interesting ideas usually come up in the bathroom) I started to write down my thoughts.
                                              • First I want the emphasis of the game to be the world and creature simulation.
                                              • The world is vast and has many secrets scattered all around for players to find (Think Zelda, Mario Bros)
                                              • Creatures are dynamic and feel alive
When I reached that note I stopped and I said what does that mean? How do you make something feel alive? After some thought I came up with an answer. (There are many answers to this question, which I want you guys to tell me what you think it can be.) My answer isn't some sort of ultimate answer but just what I came up with. I thought that for a creature to feel alive when you see it out in some area would be that the creature must:
                                              • React how you would expect it to - This is a very important idea. One of the top reason I play videogames is to see how the game reacts to my actions. Imagine punching somebody in a game and having them gain health instead of losing it. That reaction would be totally unexpected but weird and bad in my opinion. Cause and effect must make sense for a player. So to make the creatures feel alive they have to react to you in ways that you would expect them to. If you run at a bird in real life, that bird would most likely fly away. If it doesn't I usually freak out, is the bird used to humans/ isn't afraid of them? How the creatures react to your character, surrounding and your actions is a big part of making the world and creatures feel alive, in my opinion.
                                              • Their actions must vary - Nothing ruins the illusion of something feeling alive more than seeing a pattern. If the creatures keeps repeating the same pattern over and over you just see it as a system but if the creature does something that makes sense but isn't following some sort of pattern then you really start believe it is thinking about what to do rather than following a set of rules. A certain amount of randomness must be introduced into the creatures but also some rules since animals aren't random but they follow their instincts. (Just to be clear the randomness plays out when they are in the wild and not once you "captured" one. Once you capture a creature they won't randomly run away or anything and they will obey your commands.)
                                              • They have objectives - The last thing is that these creatures are a step above animals, they are a little bit smarter and have a wide range of emotions that they will express. Because of this creatures must always have an objective that they are trying to follow. I have a long list of over 20 objectives that creatures would have at any given time. Some examples are:
                                                • Locating Food
                                                • Having fun
                                                • Running away from something
                                                • Protecting something
                                                • Gathering with others
                                                • Looking for a fight
So to me these are some of the things that the creatures in this game must have to make them feel alive in the way that I want them to feel. What do you think would make the creatures feel alive in this game? Let me know in the comments below!

                                              And More!

The goal from the very beginning for Dan and I was to make fun games that we liked and we thought it we liked the games there must be people out there that will like them to. That is still our goal. We also wanted to be very open with our fans and let them in on the process of developing games. We really strive to be very open with talking and listening with you guys because in the end if you guys don't enjoy our game then we failed. I want to thank you guys for the continued support, this first year has been a roller coaster ride with mostly ups than downs and we wouldn't be here with you. I would still be working a desk job wondering if my games would ever take off. I'm really looking forward to the ending of PTD, I'm extremely impressed and excited for anything HTD, and also excited for PTD 2 and Project ANPO. Let's make this next year even better than the last!

                                              Sincerely,
                                              Samuel Otero

Welcome to Hero Tower Defense Thursday!

                                              HTD Logo

Go here to read Day 30 of Hero Tower Defense Thursday.

This update introduces a 5th Hero who comes equipped with a 1H Hammer. With him you can now take a full party of 5 into battle! We've also added the Buff/Debuff Icon System, a new cursor, and some minor other tweaks. We're working on the Light Skills next and those should be fun. Then all that's left will be Nature! At least for Tier 1 Elemental Skills, there's still plenty more to come.

For the buff/debuff icons you'll notice they are flashing, this is to warn you that they are about to run out. In this case these will always be flashing because the current skills only last a few seconds since they can be reapplied constantly. This won't be the case for all skills so when a buff/debuff lasts longer it will just stay solid.

We're looking to start on the Inventory, Hero Stats, Leveling, Skill Point System, and Class Skills soon. Those will add a lot of the RPG mechanics we want into the game and then we'll finally have nearly all the core mechanics implemented. The Inventory will be pretty typical although looting will be a little different than usual. I'll go into more detail about that when we implement it. The primary Hero Stats will be the traditional Strength, Stamina, Intelligence, etc but there will also be some secondary stats like Elemental Attunement stats which basically make you both better with a specific type of element overall as well as more resistant to the harmful effects of that type.

So look forward to those coming soon along with other cool stuff. We've also made progress with the development of the overall story (think of it like the main quest line) and will be starting to develop some more maps and such as well. So stay tuned!

On a side note, the HTD wiki folks requested some information so I'll be adding enemy stats and other tidbits to the Play HTD page for viewing till we get in-game versions implemented. Keep in mind the information there is temporary, the names and stats will be changing.

                                              What's New:

-Added Buff/Debuff icons (They flash when under 5 seconds which is currently all the time, there will be longer ones later)

                                              -Added 5th Hero

-Character Names (This was actually already in but you have to do it at the Hero Screen)

                                              -Smaller Character Nameplates

                                              -Added 1H Hammer

-Added New Cursor (It changes when dragging things)

                                              Our Goal: $50,000

                                              No blog post last week
Sometimes the week starts to pass and you haven't written the blog post and before you know it you say okay I'm focusing on making an update rather than write a blog post. That's what happened. But this week it's Monday I have a game plan for the week so I'm here writing the blog post. All rejoice!

                                              Last week's update
The week before I had set out to make the second level for Cosmoids and due to server issues I wasn't able to do that. So I took last week to focus most of my time on making the level. I'm really happy with the results and would love to hear what you guys and gals think so far of Cosmoids. I'm also considering bringing it out to the public so that you can play it even if you haven't contributed to the fundraiser (as easy as that is) so that more people can have access to it and I can get more feedback. What do you guys think of that?

On top of the second level for Cosmoids, I also added Meinfoo and Timburr into the game and they will be distributed as giveaways and mystery gifts for this week.

I also made a lot of adjustments to the server code to speed things up and I'm pretty happy with the results so far. Some people tend to mention that the "new" server is not good. The thing is we never switched servers or got a new server. We are still in the same one, I've been making changes to the way things work to speed things up.

                                              This week's update

                                              New Story Level
This week my focus is to advance the story in PTD2. I'm really excited about this next part and hopefully I will have enough time to make it as good as it can be.

                                              Shadow Moves
I will be adding some shadow moves from Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness that your shadow pokemon will be able to relearn. Right now I'm not sure how many, who will learn what, and what type of effectiveness the moves will have against other types but I will keep you posted throughout the week.

                                              Mystery Gift and Giveaway
Like most weeks, there will be a Mystery Gift and Giveaway. I've been pondering about giving out both shiny and shadow versions of each on different days as something that I could do. Either way vote on the polls to decide what you will get next.

PTD1 to PTD2 Transfers - Legendary Pokemon Arrive!
A much requested transfer is that of legendary pokemon from PTD 1 to PTD2 and it is finally time! I will be adding Articune, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo and Mew to the transfer list this week!

                                              Adopt Now for Trades
A feature I been wanting to try out for a while is for you guys to be able to put your pokemon up for adoption. Pretty much the way I'm seeing it now is that you can set an SnD coin price to your trade. A player that has SnD coins can either request a trade or straight up adopt your pokemon by paying your SnD price. You receive the coins and the other player receives the pokemon. With everything else that I have for this week I'm not sure if this will make it in time. Also you might be wondering why I don't use daily coins with this. The reason for that is the only way daily coins can exist is if they are hard to get or you can only get them at a certain rate per day. Allowing players to transfer daily coins from one account to another will open all sorts of exploits that I wish to avoid. I think this can be a great feature, what do you think?

                                              Cosmoids
I try to move Cosmoids forward every week. I feel the more I work on it the more I want to keep working on it. I had a lot of fun just focusing on the second level. There are a few things that still need to be tweaked but I'm very excited for the future of the game. As the game becomes more developed over time, we will be talking about it more and more. For now you can play it at the funding rewards page in the PTD2 Trading Center. For this week we are tweaking the character graphic, making changes to level 1 to make it more compact and to the point, I will be figuring out ways to make the tutorial parts more understandable and easier to follow, and start work on level 3.
